Truncation Symbol * To search for articles about CHILDREN you could simply search on the word CHILDREN. This would miss such words as child or childhood or childs, etc. This database allows searching for word roots.

Instead of children use CHILD*.

This would find such words as child or childhood or childs, etc.

 Wildcard Symbol ? Truncation won't always work. Look at the word cat.

Truncating cat would get such diverse words as cat, cats, catfood, caterpillar, catalog -- a -- CATASTROPHE.

Using cat? limits the truncation to one letter - in this case cats.
