BOER WAR

A military review took place on October 10 and 11 1901, in Toronto at which the Duke of Cornwall and York, presented the illustrated medals to the Canadian Contingents. The card to the left shows the military cancel used at this review.

WORLD WAR II

Postally Toronto had a much more active role than in any previous conflict. The military occupied the Canadian National Exhibition grounds during that War. The army occupied the Horse Building and the Navy occupied the Automotive Building.

In order to reduce the weight and space used to write to soldiers during WWII special forms were created for letters - these special forms were then photographed. This film was flown to England where it was then transfered back to paper and sent to the troops.

In 1948, Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie opened the Sunnybrook Military Hospital to serve convalescent members of the armed forces. While not apart of the World War II military postal system I have included a cover from that facility.

The Naval facility at Toronto during World War II was housed in the Automotive Building. It was commissioned as the "HMCS York". It served as both a recruiting and training center.

The Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve Half company was established in 1923. For World War II it was moved to the Automotive Building and in 1942 was commissioned as HMCS York. In 1947 it moved to a smaller building in the same area and continues to this day.
