Cigarette Trading Cards Ships - - Planes - - Backs of Cards
In addition to the insertion of promotional materials (score cards and notices) into cigarette packages, Canadian cigarette companies used trading cards (enclosed in cigarette packages) to promote the sending of cigarettes to Canadian troops during World War II. Pictured below are examples.
It is unclear as to the dates when trading cards were used and for how long each of the series and promotions lasted. The Seven of Clubs has an expiration date of June 1942. All the other cards (The Two of Diamonds, as an example) have an expiration date of December 1942. Were there other expiration dates as well?
An examination of The Manchester illustrates another unknown. I have three cards of the Manchester each with a different back. The promotion on the card says to collect three complete sets of the playing cards (53 cards including the Joker in each set) and send them to the company to receive a full-sized deck of playing cards.
How many fronts (pictures of ships or planes) are there (are there actually 53? - more? - less?) Is it possible to collect 53 different fronts? For each front how many different backs are there? For each back how many different fronts are there?
